Concentration of large random Gram matrices
* Tuesday 14 April 2026,   10:15,   M3 (M234)
This talk discusses the concentration of a Gram matrix XX^T and its off-diagonal part, where X is a large random matrix with independent and centered entries bounded by one. Such matrices play a fundamental role in high-dimensional statistics including covariance matrix estimation, dimension reduction and tensor clustering. It is well-known that, under suitable assumptions, the empirical eigenvalue distribution of the Gram matrix converges to the Marchenko-Pastur distribution. Furthermore, the extremal eigenvalues converge to the edges of the limiting distribution. In contrast, less is known about the behavior when the diagonal is removed. This talk focuses on the extremal eigenvalues of the off-diagonal part of the Gram matrix. The first half of the talk presents an asymptotically sharp, high-probability bound for these extremal eigenvalues of the off-diagonal part, while the second half outlines the proof.

Geometry and singularities of configuration hypersurfaces
Tuesday 21 April 2026,   15:15,   M3 (M234)
Every graph has a Kirchoff polynomial. This is a multivariate polynomial whose monomial support naturally corresponds to the spanning trees of the graph. Kirchoff polynomials are the first examples of configuration polynomials. Every subspace of a based vector space yields a configuration polynomial which exhibits tension between the combinatorics of the underlying matroid and the geometry of the vector space embedding. Configuration polynomials appear in the literature around Feynman integrals, but are also algebraically/combinatorially interesting in their own right. I will describe the construction and discuss algo-geometric aspects of configuration hypersurfaces including: their singularities (which turn out to be rational/strongly F-regular); their dual varieties; their normalized Nash blow-ups; the singularities of the latter (which also turn out to be similarly nice). Time permitting I will hint at an explicit resolution of singularities. This is based on various joint works between the author and various subsets of Denham, Mustata, Schulze, and Walther.
