HUT Saturday's general examinations
Dec 18, 2000
The following rules apply in the examinations for the Institute of Mathematics (Mat-1) and the Laboratory of Physics (Tfy-3) and the Saturday exams of the University. The reason for the implementation of these stricter rules is to ensure equal treatment of all exam takers. Please take the time to read these rules beforehand. We hope that you understand that they were instituted for the benefit of everyone.
The hall and row assignments will be announced on the hall assignment bulletin board in the main hall, on the bulletin board of hall K and usually also on bulletin boards next to the exam halls in question, at least an hour before the exam. It is your responsibility to find out the hall and row assignments in advance and get to the right hall in time.
Going to the wrong hall may shorten your exam time significantly, as you may not move from one hall to another without being accompanied by a supervisor, who usually has the time to do this only after the exam has started.
You should try to arrive in time, but you will be allowed to enter the exam hall up to 60 minutes from the time when the exam was supposed to start. At the start of the exam, there is a period of 10-15 minutes during which you may not enter the exam hall. The purpose of this period is to ensure an orderly start for the exam. There will be a sign on the door during this time prohibiting entry. The people who arrive after this time should ask the supervisors where they can sit.
You can leave the exam after the supervisors give permission to do so, usually 65 minutes from the time when the exam was supposed to start. The supervisors will also write the ending time on the board and tell you when the exam time is over.
As a rule the examinee can take only writing tools and some form of identification to his or her seat. If any other equipment is allowed in the exam, it will be specifically mentioned. As a general rule, a simple function calculator will be allowed in the exams of the Laboratory of Physics. Specifically, a pen case or your own answer papers will not be allowed. The supervisors may allow you to bring reasonably small snacks.
Primarily, bags and outdoor clothes should be left on the coat racks in the main lobby. In the main building, supervision will be arranged at the coat racks of the main lobby. If the coat racks is not supervised, leave your bags and coats on the aisles of the exam hall in places pointed to you by the supervisors. Taking a bag or a coat to your seat will be considered an attempt to cheat. Also, remember to turn the sound off on your mobile phone before you take your seat.
All the answer sheets must be returned at the end of the exam. The papers with answers on them must be marked and returned separately from possible scratch papers. You can ask for more paper from the supervisors by raising a hand with a pen in it.
Instructions on what kind of calculators, if any, are allowed, will be given either separately for each course or generally for all the courses in a laboratory.
Your identity will be checked automatically and without exception when you return your exam paper. As a rule, if you cannot prove your identity, your exam will not be graded. You can use your student card or any official form of identification to prove your identity.
People with no identity papers at hand will have an opportunity to prove their identity later. If you want to use this opportunity, you must wait until the exam is over and wait for instructions from the supervisors after that.
Questions about exam questions will be answered if answering would not be unfair to other examinees. You can ask the question from the supervisors, who will then relay it to the exam organizer. The supervisors themselves can not give answers to the questions about the exam itself. You can attract the attention the supervisors by raising your hand.
During the exam, you may use the bathroom, but only under supervision. The supervisor must follow you on the way to and from the bathroom. The supervisor must be able to see you at all times, so the bathroom door must be left slightly open and unlocked, if there is no other way to supervise the examinees. The supervisors must respect the intimacy of the examinees as much as possible under the circumstances.
You must always always follow the instructions of the supervisors. Disregarding these instructions will be considered a serious breach of the exam rules. It will usually result in an automatic failure in the exam and could be considered an attempt to cheat.
The supervisors are obligated to record all the rule breaches by the examinees on the answer paper or a supplementary sheet. The examinee has the right to see what has been written down. If the supervisors have reason to suspect cheating or attempted cheating, they must stop the suspected cheater from continuing the exam. In this case, the examinee may not leave before the exam organizer arrives. The opinions of both parties, the supervisors and the exam taker, will be written down on the spot, in a record which all parties must sign.
The disciplinary actions that can result from breaches of exam rules are specified in the Decree on Universities [Yliopistoasetus] (115/98) §20.
These rules apply to all examinations. The exams will be graded within a month of the exam date.
