The extended finite element method
The extended finite element method was introduced in the late
90's to minimize the remeshing effor while solving the elasticity
equations on a single domain with various different crack
configurations. Nowadays the method has been implemented in multiple
open source and in a few commercial finite element software packages.
In the thesis, we formulate the extended finite element method, derive
an a priori error estimate in H1-norm, review a usual method of stress
intensity factor extraction and verify the derived error estimate
numerically.
