Finite Element techniques applied to Glaciological problems
During the last
decades approximations to the Stokes equation have been the
state-of-the-art in ice sheet/shelf and glacier modelling.
Nevertheless, recent challenges, especially imposed by needed
quantification of the contribution of marine ice sheets and glaciers to
the future sea level rise motivate the deployment of full stress (full
Stokes) models. In this presentation we focus on the limitation of
approximations to the Stokes equation and the implementation of full
stress simulations in the context of ice dynamics with the Finite
Element multi-physics code Elmer.
