Mat-1.3658 Special course in numerical analysis (5 cp) P, fall 2013 I

The topic of this year is

Numerical Dynamical Systems

Lectures: On Mondays at 10:15 in M3 (M234) and Thursdays at 10:15 in M2 (M233) starting Sept 9th.
Lecturers: prof. Timo Eirola and prof. Luca Dieci (Georgia Tech, Atlanta)

Exercises: On Fridays in M3 at 10:15 by Armando Gutiérrez.

Overview: During this course we concentrate in numerical methods for finding some important quantities and objects of dynamical systems. Basic concepts of dynamical systems are also considered, while many teorems are given without proofs.

This course suits well for students in mathematics, mechanics, systems analysis, control engineering, and computational science and engineering. The course work consists of lectures, exercises, home work, and a special assignment.

Language:
the course will be given in English

Prerequisities:
Basic courses of the first two years

Material: The lecture notes will become downloadable here as well as the weekly exercises.

Grading: Passing and the grade will come from a combination of exam points and AHP points (that is Attendance, Home work, and Project work). From the exam the maximum is 30 pts while the maximum of AHP is 6+36+12=54.
Working in pairs or groups is allowed and encouraged. Anyway everyone returns her/his own solution papers.

The grading will be done according to the following figure:

        grading lines

Or as a formula: having received p% of AHP points you will need for grade j
          12+3j-(19+j) p/200
exam points. Needed exam points are given here still in a table form

Note that these are the maxima of requirements.
If, for example, the exam turns out to become too difficult, the lines will move leftwards
and the required numbers can come a little bit down.
