Towards a
variational complex for finite element systems
Abstract: The topic of geometric integration is concerned with
numerical schemes that inherit some desired property of the original
smooth system. Such schemes are philosophically attractive and
increasingly popular to study. The motivation for this particular talk
comes from the desire to build into approximate systems a given
conservation law. The most important laws arise via Noether's Theorem
for variational problems. The method of attack is to create the
algebraic structures that provide the mechanism for the proof of
Noether's Theorem. The result is not so much the approximate
preservation of an exact law but the exact preservation of an
approximate conservation law.
