The
rock--paper--scissors interaction paradigm for chemical reactions and
interacting populations, also known as the cyclic Lotka-Volterra
system, is discussed. In this context, the deterministic mean-field
description does not compare well with empirical systems, and several
modifications have been recently studied (both at TKK and elsewhere). I
go through some of these modifications. These include adding a
stochastic element to the dynamics,
tweaking the microscopic rules
to break down a conservation law, and including positional space
explicitly in the analysis and modelling. The predictions of the
different variants on the stability of the system from the extinction
point of view are emphasized.
