Drift kinetic and gyrokinetic models for transport analysis of tokamak plasmas

Transport of the thermal ion species in a magnetised fusion plasma is generally convectively dominated, and transport coefficients may exceed neo-classical estimates by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, improved understanding of turbulent transport in fusion experiments may allow for significant optimization on the size of these apparatus. Improved confinement regimes have have been identified experimentally, and computational investigation of these conditions is currently a hot topic. Neo-classical transport of non-thermal ion species (such as fusion alphas) is also important from the viewpoint of materials.

In this presentation we introduce the kinetic models utilized in investigations of transport in magnetized fusion experiments, and the computational work that has been done in collaboration between TKK and VTT on this problem.
